Done! Yay me! That was far less painful than I'd feared.

In today's heartwarming David Cook story (shut up, I know I'm obsessed, 'kay?), Lindsey Rose was at last night's show. (For those not following Idol: Background story here. BYOT (Bring Your Own Tissues))

Can we get an 'awwwww'? )

In other Idol-related news, I'm really grooving on Adam's performance of 'Whataya Want From Me' at the Letterman show. It's stunningly beautiful and vulnerable. I like the understated and vulnerable Adam an awful lot, yes. More of that, pls!

Title: The Education of Mr. Toad
Author: [info]redfiona99
Summary: Even if he didn’t go to school anymore, it didn’t mean that Toad wasn’t learning.
Recipient: [info]theghettocyborg
Request Used: Toad (as a member of the Brotherhood) and the X-Men grow up fighting each other during their teen years.
Ratings/Spoilers: PG-13/12 for swearing. Pre-movies so no spoilers.
Added Notes: I’ve tried to fit this into X1 and X3 canon, so Hank isn’t blue and furry during this.

28th-Nov-2009 09:46 am - "Round's On Me", Logan, Kurt, PG, for [info]smirnoffmule
Title: Round's On Me
Author: [info]iambickilometer
Summary: Two mutants walk into a bar. One turns to the other and asks, "So how did you end up working in a school?"
Recipient: [info]smirnoffmule
Request Used: Logan, Nightcrawler. Loser buys the beers. Friendship or slash.
Rating/Spoilers: appropriate for most ages/ X-2 spoilers.
Notes: Thanks to [info]xturncoatxiii for the beta. I had grandiose plans for a post-X3 story about coping which would involve all three requests, but when I sat down to write, this more humble approach is what happened.

Round's On Me )
28th-Nov-2009 09:30 am - Suppose they can't help it?
I was thinking of this in connection with an upcoming Yule visit to one of my daughters, and the way she picked up on one of my annoying 'habits' which I think has a physical cause and she thinks is a tic.

It came to me that it's not that they micromanage; it's that they notice such incredibly petty minutae of behavior! The classic being an episode from the old sitcom "All In The Family," where Archie goes off on the order in which Meathead puts his pants on.

Now, it came to me that if people notice minutae, perhaps they're hard-wired to do so, like the person who can describe every tiny detail of, say, herbs of New Mexico, and can go on for hours about the difference between aloe vera and other aloes.

Perhaps it's the same sort of thing as our own sensory hypersensitivities!

How many of us have been told, irritably, that we're "just too sensitive" and "why are you even bothering to notice such a trivial thing?" And how many of us are thinking the same thing about the tendency of our relative, connections, and coworkers to nitpick our petty habits and tics?

Same difference?
Grading constitutional law papers is SO MUCH EASIER than grading administrative law papers. Mostly because they're shorter. Like, a third of the size at the most, and it just doesn't take as much time to read through 2 pages as it does reading through 6. Therefore, I think I'm going to get through them all today, yay! I only have 9 left of the 35, so it should be completely doable. Know what that means? That means I get a day off tomorrow, yay! Maybe I'll even get around to doing the laundry! Oh the excitement that is my life...

But first: Time for my chocolate eclair. I really need the sugar boost right about now, plus, I've totally deserved it. (Also, I'm actually really proud of some of these students, because they're obviously working really hard and it's showing in their papers. Go them!)
29th-Nov-2009 02:31 am - Moving Slow, Rogue/Jean, PG-13, for [info]aphrodite_mine
Title: Moving Slow
Author: [info]joanne_c
Summary: Rogue suffers an injury during a mission and gets to know Jean in some new ways. Jean/Rogue UST headed to RST.
Recipient: [info]aphrodite_mine
Request Used: Rogue (optional femslash is optional: Mystique, Jean, Kitty)
I don't like de-powered Rogue, but I do like to see her suffer. Perhaps something involving a mission gone wrong?
Rating/Spoilers: PG-13, no spoilers for the movies.

Moving Slow )
28th-Nov-2009 09:42 am - Secrets and Lies (Jean, Charles, Scott) for [info]joanne_c
Title: Secrets and Lies

Author: [info]mofic

Summary: There’s something Jean never told Scott.

Recipient: [info]joanne_c

Request Used: Charles Xavier/Jean Grey or Charles and Jean. Charles teaching Jean how to control her powers and if the author can, his teaching her about telepathic sex. Inclusion of Scott is fine in either scenario as well.

Scenario: “Secrets and Lies” draws only upon the first X-Men movie as canon, so the account of Jean’s childhood, family, and entry into the X-Men does not match that depicted in X3 or that of the comics. This story is, in addition, consistent with my X1 fiction and expands upon some events briefly recounted in my series “Canadian Nights,” “Reminiscences,” “Taking Chances,” and “Past and To Come.” Except for the reflection at the end, everything takes place before the events depicted in “I Know What You Are.”

Acknowledgements: Many thanks to my betas: [info]talktooloose, [info]niteslayer, [info]lilacsigil, [info]bittenfeld.

=================================================================================
Additional Note on Request Not Used and Why: [info]joanne_c had a Scott/Logan slash request and that’s most of what I write so my first inclination was to do it. The request was “Scott/Logan or Scott and Logan (much prefer slash but is okay if not). Learning about each other after Jean's death in X2, the good and the bad and accepting each other for who they are. I would like for Jean/Logan to have been completely one-sided on Logan's part, please.” I didn’t do it for this ficathon because I decided I’d written that story pretty thoroughly already here and didn’t have anything more to say about it.

Excuse me for a moment, I just need to get this out of the system:

Gruntgruntwhinewhineidontwannaaaaaaaaaaaahmpfwhinewhingegrunt

There. Now it's time to get started on those 32 papers that need grading before Monday. But first, a bath, and a trip to the baker's to pick up some lovely bread (and maybe a cake). A girl needs provisions if she's going to get through all that in one day!

(oh, forgot to mention this, but I just learned two days ago that the professor I thought was going to be my thesis advisor next semester? Is totally not going to actually be available, so I need to find another advisor. And the deadline for deciding on topic and advisor is in two weeks. And there are no other professors currently specialising in the topics I want to write about. No need to panic, though, because I've talked the professor I had for my bachelor paper into being my advisor, even though I'm not going to be writing exactly within his area of expertise. Phew. Crisis averted!)

Recipient:SullenSiren

Request Used:Character/pairing request 3: Gambit (Origins)
Specific request: I'd love to see Gambit in the post-Origins years, meeting up with various film mutants. Mystique, Charles, Erik, etc. Any are good, but the older characters especially. Pairings, slash, het - anything is fine.

28th-Nov-2009 08:24 am - FIC: Passing (Henry McCoy | R | for [info]redfiona99)
TITLE: Passing
AUTHOR: [info]lonelywalker
FANDOM: X-Men Movieverse
RATING: R
RECIPIENT: [info]redfiona99
REQUEST: Henry McCoy. Set before or during X-Men 1, Hank has to have an opinion on mutant registration.
SUMMARY: As the Mutant Registration Act turns friends into enemies and enemies into friends, Hank desperately tries to retain some sense of normality – or what passes for normal, at any rate.
NOTES: Many thanks to [info]lilacsigil for beta-reading. Spoilers only through X1, although there are very vague allusions to X3.

Passing
Title:How's your halo?

Author:[info]smaragdbird

Summary:Bobby promises the newly arrived Warren that the X-Men will free his friend Jimmy from Worthington's labs but is quickly disillusioned when political reasoning counts more than the freedom of a mutant boy. Bobby turns to other sources to hold up his promise and meets an old friend.

Recipient:SullenSiren

Request Used:Character/pairing request 1: Pyro/Iceman
Specific request: Reunion-ating! We usually see Pyro coming back to the mansion, or them meeting from opposite sides. I think it'd be interesting to see a story with a disillusioned Bobby going to the Brotherhood, either with Pyro still there, or with Pyro as the former Brotherhood who's seen both sides and is jaded enough to know they're both bullshit. But really, anything with the two meeting up again, with or without X3 canon!

Rating/Spoilers:PG-13/ implied Remy/Logan and implied past Rogue/Bobby and John/Piotr
